Five Sentence Fiction: Waves

Well, I lied about the biscuits. Maybe next week. I underestimated the amount of time the Cracked Flash Fiction Competition would take to get all set up yesterday (also I had car troubles for most of the day yesterday, whee). (Also, you should join us on Saturday for the CFF Competition!)

For today, I'm going to write a little flash fiction. Some WordPress blogs require you to write your flash elsewhere, and then link it. It just occurred to me I probably could write five sentences on Twitter and link it, but for now, this blog will work.

Memories

"Wait for me?" Matt asked, brown pack slung over his shoulder and brown eyes imploring as he held her smooth hand in his calloused one. The ship waited patiently across the bay, ready for its passengers.

"Yes," Faye lied sincerely with a sad smile.

He sensed the truth, but he smiled anyways, and gave her a chaste kiss, distance already between them. Then his hand slid away as he turned, waves washing his footsteps away like a forgotten memory.

Exciting Things

I missed last week's two posts due to life suddenly slapping me in the face; I graduated from both High School and College, and my parents are gone for two weeks as of this morning (leaving me temporary mother of the house). Life is starting to calm down and settle into the summer's groove.

I plan on returning to my blogging duties tomorrow, with a post on tasty white bread (biscuits!), and on Thursday, I think I'll blog about my experiences with Mary Sues.

As a side note, I've stumbled into a sort of Flash Fiction haze. Check out my Writing page up at the top there for a list of flash fiction competitions that run like all the time. Seriously. It's great. I'm going to enter all the things.

I'm eating through Flash Dogs' Light and Dark Solstice anthologies (and you should too). Flash fiction is exciting! Even MORE exciting, I became a member of the Flash Dogs today! Excuse a squee. (I cannot convey the level of excitement this brings. My first publication may appear in the next anthology.)

As another note, I've managed to drag Sie into a flash fiction competition endeavor (I should also drag Rin into it). We're not sure when it will run from and to, but we're going to make a blog for it very shortly. It's going to happen. It's very exciting. It's going to be called the Cracked Flash Fiction Competition (CFFC!).

Orange Julius

Sort of like Jamba Juice's "Orange Dream Machine" drink, but less ice cream. I should make it with ice cream sometime.

It was really tasty. My insides are freezing now.
6 oz orange juice concentrate*
2 cups of milk**
1/2 cup sugar
1 tray of ice cubes***

1. Blend all ingredients together until ice is at desired consistency****
2. Nom deliciousness.

*This can be done with fresh-squeezed orange juice, or even whole (peeled) oranges. But we usually use concentrate; cut a 12 oz can in half to get 6 oz. 
**The original recipe says 1 cup milk, 1 cup water, but this way is totally tastier. You can probably use heavy whipping cream or half-and-half for an even richer drink. 
***Approximately 16 ice cubes. For thicker results, use more ice; for thinner results, use less ice.
****I like little crunchies in my smoothie. Some people don't like that.

Action Scenes

Action is something I struggle with. For some reason, my friends say it's my strong suit, and I don't understand. I have a hard time envisioning all these limbs and weapons flying around everywhere, and what appropriate responses would be. I have a hard time keeping track of all the characters. It's not pretty. 

Which brings me to a point: Fighting is messy. You have to really think about what's going on to know what's going to happen.

Weapons

Something that's difficult to avoid when writing fighting scenes is knowing how to actually use the weapons you're writing. Bare-handed, staff, sword, nun-chucks, long bows, crossbows, guns, daggers, war hammer, ax, or even magic, all have different abilities and limitations. Even different types of weapons are used differently; you would not use a katana or cutlass as you would a long sword. Therefore, you would not write a katana or cutlass as you would a long sword, or your characters may find themselves doing impossible or simply downright ridiculous things. 

Secondly, you have to know what weapons your characters are suited to. A halfling would not be able to wield a sword that's nearly as long as them very well. Someone who needs agility over power needs something smaller. Someone who needs power over agility and grace will likely choose something bigger and more formidable. An untrained person probably won't care, but they will need to be able to hold their weapon to think they can do something with it. 


Responding to Unexpected Attack

My reaction when someone scares me is to injure them (much to my family's chagrin). My brain has already kicked into "freeze, flight, or fight" mode, and it decided on 'fight' as soon as I got scared/surprised. It happens even before I can see if the person scaring me is truly a threat or not. 

Almost everyone has this instinct (I've only met one person who doesn't). How do your characters react to sudden attack? Some people who think they would fight will freeze. Others who think flight would be their first reaction will fight. There's really no way to know until it's happened, I think. 


Intentions

I've heard that there are four different intentions when fighting: immobilize, injure, cripple, or kill. Intentions determine how someone fights. Remember that intentions apply to both sides: attackers and defenders. An attacker/defender may want to kill the other, while the other only wants to stop the attacker/defender from doing so. 

(The attacker is usually the one that initiates the fight, but your definition can depend on different things, like who's stronger/more aggressive, who's ganging up on who, or whose viewpoint you're writing from. Sometimes both are the attackers.)

(I'll use 'she' to refer to attackers, and 'he' to refer to defenders, for the sake of sanity.)

Immobilize

If an attacker is aiming to subdue the defender, she's not going to fight as viciously as she would normally. She'll try to use non-lethal techniques to subdue the defender. 

This gives the defender an advantage, which he may or may not take. If he has no compulsions about maiming/killing the attacker, he can fight without having to worry about hurting her. If he only wants to subdue her as well, then they're fighting on even footing.

Injure

In this scenario, the attacker is going to avoid using lethal blows, but she wants to give the defender something to think about for a while. She wants to bruise and wound the defender a bit. 

If the defender is wanting to injure the attacker, he's probably worried for his own life, no matter her intent. (I don't know about you, but I'd be trying to injure anybody who tried to kidnap or kill me.) He's not going to worry about immobilizing her when he's worried about keeping himself healthy and alive. 

Cripple

To cripple someone is to do damage that someone can't recover from. If the attacker has gone here, she's really pissed at the defender. She wants to break his legs and set 'em so he can't walk straight ever again. She wants to leave a lasting mark on him, and possibly use him as an example to others of "this is what happens when you screw with me." Killing him would be too merciful, and merely injuring him would quickly be forgotten.

The defender is scared at this point (or he and the attacker have a long-standing rivalry or something--in that case, his motivation is much like her's: kneecapping). Subduing the attacker has failed, and/or injuring her did nothing to deter her. The only resort left, short of killing her, is to maim her.

It also could be that the defender has been seen as a weakling, and he's going out of his way to prove that that is simply not true, and you'd best remember it.

Kill

This one is fairly self-explanatory. The attacker wants to kill the defender for whatever reason. She's not going to hold back; lethal shots are her friend.

A defender with this motivation is either merely fighting without restraint, has a previous history with the attacker, or is someone who will retaliate with death at being attacked. He's also not going to hold back.

Both of them will do everything they can to be the winner of the fight. 


Fighting Outnumbered

Often, the hero has honor and would never gang up with his buddies on a only one or two people. However, the hero's enemies will often disregard this rule. The play of battle changes when you're fighting odds that are five or even ten to one. 

For example, when fighting against greater odds, you need to fight dirty.  Fighting outnumbered has no rules. Dirt needs to be flung in eyes, arms need to be bitten, faces need to be scratched, fingers broken, etc. If your attackers aren't going to play nice, you can't play nice. Nice people get killed. 

If you're alone, standing out in the open is a good way to get yourself surrounded and quickly stabbed from the behind; you can't fight against ten people all attacking at once from all sides. Therefore, you need to put your back to something, like a wall. (Don't put yourself in a corner--that leaves you open to getting stuck and simply worn down by your attackers, and it also limits your ability to fight with certain weapons (e.g. a staff). There are only a few circumstances where a corner is a good idea--if your right arm isn't working, you don't want anybody coming at you from that side, for example.)

Try to conserve your strength. Facing ten attackers means they don't have to do a lot of work to fight you, but you do to keep them away. If they're smart, they'll just wear you down. This means you need to a) end the battle quickly or b) make sure you can hold out long enough to beat them all. 

Be as clever as possible. If you see an opportunity to trip someone up, take it. Fling other people into their comrades; trick the attackers into slipping in mud or blood; use any of your surroundings to your advantage--put your back to the sun so they can't see straight; dodge through that minefield better than they can (okay, this probably isn't a good idea (at all), but the same thing applies to a forest or city); etc. 

Fighting a Stronger Opponent 

Much of what applies for fighting against multiple opponents applies to fighting a stronger opponent; notice your enemies weaknesses and recognize your strengths, and use them against the opponent. You probably want to end the conflict quickly, otherwise they'll just wear you down. 


Dialogue

There might be cursing and other such exclamations. There might be trying to intimidate another character with words. But, unless you're writing an anime, no one is going to pause to have a full-length conversation in the middle of a battle. (The villain and hero might trade a few blows, back off, and yell/talk to each other, and then go back to fighting. In this case, more dialogue is feasible, but not while fighting, really). 


Actually Writing Fighting

Alright, you're probably bored of me droning on and saying to yourself, "Yeah, yeah, that's all good, but how do I actually write a fighting scene?"

(My truthful answer: LOL I have no clue. I usually blunder through them blindly and hope I've written something coherent. But I'll try to give you something useful here.)

Here are some things to think about when writing fighting scenes: 
  1. Study. Research the weapons you'll be writing; watch videos on how people use them (this may be a touch difficult to do with magic; in that case, you need to know well how your magic works). Let actual fights disillusion you of Hollywood myths. Also read other people's versions of fighting, both fictional and not. 
  2. Shorten. A problem I have is that I like to make my sentences long; in a fight scene, your writing structure should reflect the action. Short sentences! Short paragraphs! Move the action along.
  3. Simplify. Don't focus on description too much. You need some when your character is using their surroundings to their advantages, but a character is not going to marvel at the beauty of stained-glass windows when they've got a sword coming at their throat. 
  4. Space any Dialogue Tastefully. 
  5. Remember Intentions. What do the fighters want to do to one another?
  6. Remember Limits. What can't the fighters do? What is physically impossible? 
I'll share a short excerpt from the beginning of a novelette (the first chapter) I wrote, called The Space Between: 
            "Krammick, woman!" the man growled as he caught Bell's fist in his hand, fingers tightening around her own. He snatched her other wrist as she attempted to free her captive hand.
            "Let me go!" she snapped, bringing her heel down on his toes. The action surprised her and obviously didn't hurt him—who the dreld wore steel-toe boots now a-days?!
            "I don't have time for this," he muttered, releasing her fist in order to twist her other arm, bringing her to her knees as she cried out, pain flaring in her shoulder. She braced herself against the ground with her free hand, gritting her teeth as he held her arm in a lock.
            "Fen," Bell heard him swear with a huff, which proceeded clinking metal sounds. Twisting her head, her eyes shot wide at the sight of handcuffs—the sort that lawkeeps used.
            "No!" she yelped as she kicked back at his foot. He easily evaded the clumsy attack and pushed her forward onto the ground. She attempted to push herself back up with her free hand, but he wrenched her arm from beneath her, snapping both her wrists into the cuffs.
            "By the voids!" he growled as he pulled her roughly upright, pushing her forward while keeping a hand on her upper arm. She stumbled, purposefully stalling them to give herself more time to think.
            The man would have none of it, giving an irritated growl and spinning Bell around, hand firmly on her shoulder. She kicked at his shin, but he ignored it, grabbing her around the waist and hoisting her over his shoulder effortlessly. Her stomach fled to her throat as one of his arms wrapped around her waist and the other gripped her legs—keeping her on his shoulder as well as preventing her from kicking the fen out of his midsection.
            "Put me down, fen-faced-dreld!" Bell protested as he began striding down the hall. She gritted her teeth—it really was not a comfortable way to be carried, with his shoulder jerking into her stomach with step.
            Straining her head, and shaking her brown hair out of her eyes, she could see her surroundings changing as they swiftly came into a hallway—a docking hall, she noted as the door shut behind them with a hiss.
            They entered the docking bay and he carried her inside his ship—which had been left open.
            "Put me down, you—oof!" He did as she requested, thumping her down in the passenger seat of the ship, then held her down as he drew and tightened the two chest belts and one stomach belt in place, securing her in the seat—all while she swore profusely at him.
            "Starting to make me wish I had my taser," he muttered as he took a place in the pilot's seat—a good four or five feet away from her, which was, unfortunately, out of her kicking radius. 

Referring back to the list:

1. All of this is done barehanded. Something, as I'm reading this, that could probably be confused in a reader's mind for what position Bell is in is the line ". . . releasing her fist in order to twist her other arm, bringing her to her knees." Something else you should do is make sure all of the fighting is clear and is actually physically possible. Rewriting is a thing. 
2. Yeah, no, I'm still not good at the short-sentences thing. But I think I do pretty well with the paragraphs! 
3. I think I nailed this one (and we're not going to say it's because I tend to have a lack of description in my writing). There's not really a whole lot of description where they are as Bell is defending herself, although she takes note of her surroundings as she's hauled off. 
4. Well, I like dialogue, but I think I restrained myself well. There's a lot of exclaiming going on.
5. We can tell that Bell's intent is simply to stop and escape from the man, and/or do any damage she can to deter him from doing whatever it is he wants to do--which, we discover, is to subdue and capture her. The man definitely doesn't have lethal intentions.
6. I think I did pretty well with this one, too. Bell's limits are mostly that she's smaller than the man, and a whole lot less trained and powerful.

Swedish Pancakes (Breakfast Crepes)

Most of us like tacos, yeah? How about breakfast tacos? That's pretty much what Swedish Pancakes are. They're kind of like crepes, but hold together better. And they're thicker and tastier.

I was surprised this one didn't rip more, being the first one I've made in a long while
1 cup of milk
3/4 cup flour*
1 tablespoon sugar
2 eggs
1 tablespoon butter
Dash of vanilla
Pinch of salt
Various condiments**

1. Blend all ingredients together except condiments.
2. On medium heat, pour 1/3 of the pancake mixture into a medium-sized frying pan. Swirl the pancake mix around so that it covers the bottom completely.
3. When the top of the pancake looks dry (this shouldn't take long), flip it on the other side.
4. Cook for seven or so seconds on that side, then remove the pancake from the pan and onto a plate.
5. Load your breakfast taco up with whatever you want (syrup, jam, coconut, powdered sugar, butter, frozen fruits, not-frozen fruits, chocolate chips, whip cream, etc.,. Be creative).
6. Nom deliciousness.

*We were out of white flour today, so I made it with wheat flour. The pancakes were still fabulous. 
**You can seriously put whatever you want on these things.

Cracked Flash Fiction

Two of my friends (Rin and Sie) and I frequently set out to write some crappy (but hilarious) flash fiction (well, and sometimes the result isn't so crappy) called Cracked Flash Fiction (CFF). The idea originally came about when one of us was drugged up from some doctor's appointment, and we began word warring* from a writing prompt (also called prompt warring, a term I came up with a few years ago). 

CFF is a perfect example that one's writing--particularly the first draft--does not have to be perfect. We have made spelling, grammar, punctuation, content, and probably continuity mishaps throughout our journey, some of which would make any decent editor's eyes burn out (although we usually catch those eventually and fix them). Sometimes, however, these flashes come out pretty decent, and we find ourselves with a new story idea. 

Writing from a prompt is an excellent way of writing something even when you have no idea what to write, I find. 

I wanted to share one of my favorites from my recently-written pile of CFF. It's called Programmer Knights. Enjoy!

*A word war is not to be confused with a word sprint: a word war is when an amount of time is chosen (e.g. 10, 15 minutes), and the participants write for that amount of time. When the time is up, the person with the most words wins. A word sprint, however, is a race to an amount of words, starting from a designated point of time; whoever reaches that amount first wins.

Programmer Knights


"You of all people know there's nowhere to run."  
The King sighed knowingly, looking over his lovely, perfect kingdom. "But I'd like to try."  
"You have, my lord," Benson replied with a twitch of a smile. "Don't you recall? You nearabout had the programs in knots for trying to leave the palace grounds over and over." He gestured for the king to walk with him down the corridor, which beamed with light that splashed onto marble stone.  
"Ah, yes," he replied dryly. "It drove poor Madeline half-mad." 
"She doesn't understand," Benson replied. "Full sentience is not something every one of us achieves." 
"And yet there are people from every class that have," the king mused. "But we are unable to break from our given roles."  
"Indeed," Benson said quietly, looking to the windows, a frown creasing his forehead.  
"I'm merely the one the programmers refuse to kill for trying to," the king voiced Benson's thoughts, a bitter tone entering his voice. Benson had replaced the last advisor, Marion, two years ago. "I grow tired of this existence." 
"We need a bug," the advisor replied thoughtfully. Reports of the bugs had dwindled over the past few years, with more knights accepting the quest to defeat them. In reality, it was simply the programmers finding inventive ways to work out better ways to control the program.  
"Those are nearly extinct. More are eliminated each day. The palace is the last place you would be able to find one, either way." 
"Then what of a quest?" the advisor suggested. "You have the ability to make new quests." 
"But what kind of quest? I have tried making a quest to kidnap the king before," the king informed the advisor, who smiled again.  
"Not quite what I meant, King." Benson moved to the closest window, looking down on the training grounds for knights. "Give a quest to one of the Newsies."  
The king joined the advisor, looking down at the younger lads fighting. They couldn't have achieved full sentience yet, too young in their programs. They would obey quests without question. "What kind of quest do you suggest, oh wise advisor?" 
"Capture a bug," Benson replied. "But you have to be clever about the phrasing, otherwise the programmers will be suspicious." 
The king rubbed his beard thoughtfully, gaze sharpening. Quest rules were special. Things that normally weren't allowed on palace grounds would be. Benson's plan had merit, and it couldn't do harm to try it.

"What do you suggest?"

Pizza (and Breadsticks)

Two months ago, I underwent surgery. The only thing I wanted to eat after my surgery was pizza. It didn't matter if it was store-bought or homemade. I got really good at making tasty pizza from another family recipe that week.

Someone I know complained one day that homemade bread is really tasty, but it takes forever to make. She was stunned when I revealed that I have pizza-bread recipe that only takes 10 minutes to rise! (It's because of all the yeast.)

I'm really sad that I ate all of this already.
Difficulty: 3
Total time: 35 min
Servings: 1 (We usually make 3 or 4 batches for four or five people)

1/2 cup of warm water
1 tablespoon of yeast
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 cup of white flour*
1/2 teaspoon of salt
Desired seasonings (garlic, oregano, Italian seasoning, etc.,.)

1. Dissolve yeast in water.
2. Add sugar, flour, and salt; mix thoroughly.
3. Knead dough for 3 minutes. 
4. Let dough rise for 10 minutes.**
5. Grease pan, spread dough out on pan.
6. Add desired condiments (sauce, cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, etc.,) and seasonings. 
7. Cook for 15 minutes at 375°F, or until cheese is bubbly and browning.***
8. Let cool, nom deliciousness. 

*The pizza still actually tastes pretty great with whole-wheat flour instead of white. ALSO, you're probably going to end up putting more like 1 1/2 cups of flour into the recipe by the time you're done; the dough should be sticky, but not sticky all over the place. Non-sticky dough is okay, but doesn't taste as good, for reference. 
**It's cold all the time here, so the rising doesn't work well unaided; I put the pizza-dough bowl in another bowl of warm water: 
***Times may vary depending on oven irregularities, and how much stuff you've got on your pizza. You can also not wait for the cheese to bubble, since that causes a texture change, but it should look like this if you want it bubbly and brown:

Breadsticks


In our cookbook, the pizza dough is actually under the breadstick recipe. So here's the unadulterated breadstick recipe!


1/2 cup of warm water
1 tablespoon of yeast
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 cup of white flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup butter
Desired seasonings (garlic, oregano, Italian seasoning, Parmesan cheese, etc.,.)

1. Dissolve yeast in water.
2. Add sugar, flour, and salt; mix thoroughly.
3. Knead dough for 3 minutes. 
4. Let dough rise for 10 minutes.**
5. Roll dough out on parchment paper and cut into strips with a pizza-slicer.****
6. Put breadsticks in pan--coating both sides in melted butter. Add seasonings, if desired. 
7. Cook for 15 minutes at 375°F, or until sticks are golden brown. 
8. Let cool, nom fabulous deliciousness. 

****This time around, I rolled the dough straight into the pan and cut it there, then poured the butter on top of it and pushed butter beneath the dough. XD

Lanette's Sugar Cookies (and Buttercream Frosting)

I do not like cake. I will eat cake, but I don't like it (the only cakes worth calories are hot-milk cake and my mother's Seafoam-frosting cake (I'll have to write a blog post on both of those later)).

Now, you may wonder what, then, do I have on my birthday? Well, I used to have ice cream cakes. Those are tasty. But a few years ago, I got the brilliant idea to have cookie cake, using my favorite cookie (another family recipe): the sugar cookie.

My first cake, inspired by a cupcake mural, looked like this:

I had another cake after that that was Doctor-Who themed (I don't think we got pictures of it, but it had graham crackers dipped in blue chocolate and splotched with white windows, all set on the orange frosting which was the time vortex). Then I had a flower cake (my mother was in charge), with a great big center and normal-sized cookies around it. And this year, I had a wedding-esque cookie-cake (my mother was in charge again). Results:



The pieces were really big. 
She cooked four squares of cookie, put frosting in between each, stacked them, frosted the sides, and then decorated the outside. Ridiculous. But really tasty.

Cookie Recipe: 

Difficulty: 5
Dough: 20 min
Baking: 8 min (per pan)
Cooling: 20 min (at least) 

2 cups sugar
1 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
4+ cups flour
1 teaspon vanilla
1 recipe buttercream frosting

1. Mix all ingredients well, adding enough flour (approximately 4-6 cups) to make dough not sticky.
2. Roll out dough, and cut out cookies of any size.
3. Bake at 375ºF for 8 minutes.*
4. Let cool, then frost with buttercream frosting.
5. Nom fabulous deliciousness.

*Depending on ovens, tastes, and cookie sizes, time may vary; my mother likes cookies soft, my father likes them burnt (I like them in-between; a little more than brown). Experimentation may be required. Cookie cakes take some time longer to bake. 

Buttercream Frosting recipe:

Difficulty: 3
Mixing: 5 min
Piping: 5 min (per 24 cookies)

1 cup butter**
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar
Dye of choice

1. Cream butter together.
2. Add milk and vanilla together; mix well.
3. Add powdered sugar to mixture one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
4. If desired, add dye until colored to perfection.***

If frosting is too thick, thin with milk (shouldn't be too thick if you follow measurements exactly).

**The recipe actually calls for 1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening and 1/2 margarine, but all-butter is definitely way tastier (also juuuuust slightly healthier, since margarine has trans-fat). Butter is great. 
***Sugar cookies taste the best with burgundy-colored frosting XD We make giant batches of burgundy-colored cookies on Valentine's day for our friends, so it's the color/taste I grew up on.  

Frosting the cookies: 

I notice that people tend to take a knife and cover cookies in frosting smoothly. This is totally fine at home, but it's a lot more classy to show up to an event with well-frosted cookies. It will take practice, but anyone can pipe frosting onto cookies! (Also, it's way quicker, and a lot less painful; I speak from experience.) If you don't have any of these materials, you may have to fork out five or ten bucks

We normally use the star-tip, medium or jumbo. Not required, though.

A lot of people have this weird way of holding the bag sort of curled up beneath your hand,
but it's really messy and irritating. I don't recommend that way.  
I don't know what these thingies are called, but many people use them. Adapters or something. The pieces on the left go in the bag first, then you can stick your tip on the outside, and screw that on with the pieces on the right; these enable you the ability to change the tip without cutting it out or using all your frosting and cleaning the bag out.

When Revising and Rewriting

I recently read and critiqued a first-draft of a story and I wanted to share some advice I gave for the next draft. I'll summarize and generalize, and hopefully somebody will find this useful.



1. Remove any word that does not contribute to propelling the plot forward. 

You've probably heard this before--because it's sound advice. Too many irrelevant words can lose a reader--especially now a-days, when people are used to reading short Facebook and Twitter posts (did you know that many people are losing the ability to "deep read" text (do a search on digital reading)? Keep reading novels, people). 

If you need practice with this principle, go stick a few of your sentences into Twitter posts; a character limit forces you to become creative and often makes your sentences more interesting.

2. Be sure to characterize. 

I want to feel a connection to a character--especially the main one. I want to know why a character is the way they are; what events made them that way? You don't have to tell this--I do not want to hear that they are the best detective in the city because they've solved 1000 criminal cases, or their accuracy with a gun is akin to a god's. That sounds like a lot of hot air if there's no evidence to support it. Show me why they're (allegedly) the best.

It's also irritating if they seem infallible. If a character has no way to be defeated, there's no point to the plot. People have to win some and lose some. Now, don't fall into the pit of your character is too weak--a character who loses over and over again is also irritating (unless they're a side character and it's obviously for comedic effect); often times, this leads to angsting, and I don't want to read an entire book about angst (unless it's really good and the plot is compelling--see Monsters of Men).

I want characters with emotion who move the plot forward. Give them personality and a back story, then slowly give it to the reader.

3. Balance between slow and fast. 

This one is a hard one to explain, and probably harder to follow, but basically it goes like this: rushing around all the time can get confusing and overwhelming for a reader. Having one action scene after the next can get exhausting. Readers need to breathe a little. Unless you're at the BIG climax, action scenes should be tastefully spread between scenes that build up to action scenes. We need to know the reason behind stuff and what's going on. Build up suspense with the slow stuff.

However, be careful with slow stuff. In the latest Green Rider book, the fifth one, (which I hate) it takes like 15% of the book to get anywhere mildly interesting--because the main character is bed-bound, and she's not even snooping about.

Slow stuff doesn't have to be boring. Make the contributions to the plot be interesting, and it won't be boring.

I hope that section makes sense. 

4. Read your writing out loud. 

Not only can you more easily find grammar and spelling mistakes this way, but you'll probably find yourself stumbling over some words because they don't flow. A lot of people don't have a very well-developed internal-voice, so they don't "hear" the words in their heads.

Reading it out loud forces your brain to look at each word--reading in one's head can filter out certain words. Did you know that if you have two 'the's right in a row, the brain usually skips right over it? This is why the the act of reading it out loud helps. Did you see what I did there? If you didn't, read that sentence over again, verrry slowly. 

5. Get an editor. 

If you're on the last draft, and you're planning on self-publishing whatever you're writing, please, please, get an editor (as well as some beta-readers and proof-readers). A second set of eyes always helps. Don't finish your NaNoWriMo novel then instantly put it on the market. Bad, bad idea. There's nothing I despise more than picking up a book and finding two or three errors in every other sentence.

Do your editor a favor and don't send the first draft into them, however. Get beta-readers early on and do a few rewrites, then edit it yourself the best you can. This will save them a lot of headache, and it will likely make your story better. If your editor is less focused on grammar and spelling mistakes, and you've done your bit to try and clean up the plot, then they can help more towards content.

7. Always write, read, and review--often. 

The only true way to get better at something is to do it over. Again, and again. Save your writing, and look at it two years after you've written it--you might be amazed at how far you've come.

Read other people's stuff! I'd advise reading mostly good writing, but sometimes it's useful to look at what not to do (see the fifth book of Green Rider).

Review other people's stuff! When you dissect someone else's piece, it often draws attention to what you've been doing wrong in your own writing, and you can make notes what not to do, or what to do better, or what things you like.

No-Bake Oatmeal Chocolate Cookies

Today, I am making cookies from a favorite recipe in our family cookbook. They are fairly unhealthy, and very tasty.

I think I under-cooked them. But they're still fabulous.
Difficulty Rating: 3
Time: 35 min

1/2 cup butter or margarine*
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup peanut butter**
3 cups oat (quick or slow) 
2 teaspoons vanilla

1. Bring first 4 ingredients to a boil.
2. Boil on medium for 45-60 seconds, stirring frequently.***
3. Place peanut butter, oatmeal, and vanilla in a large bowl and add the boiled mixture; stir for two minutes (or until thoroughly mixed).
4. Spoon on cookie sheet and let cool (put it in the freezer for faster results).****
5. Nom the fabulous results

*Real butter and cream/canned milk will make the cookies richer.
**I've seen recipes with more peanut butter than this (like 3/4 cup); 1/2 cup keeps the flavor of peanut butter down (a flavor I dislike). 
***Depending on your stove, this may be anywhere in this zone. Just be careful not to burn your cookies. If they're very crumbly and not sticky-together-y, and taste a little scorched, they're probably burnt. (However, if you don't cook for long enough, your cookies may never set; if you have a gooey mass of cookie that you can't pick up without coating your fingers in it, you failed to cook it for long enough.)
****My eldest sister makes half batches right in the pan and then eats it warm.
